No….Really! I haven’t.

I’m one of those “freaks” that all of a sudden gets quiet when the discussion about what was on t.v. last night (last week, last month) starts.

I can’t participate. I haven’t watched t.v. in 4 years.

(No…….Actually! I really haven’t. We have a t.v. but it’s used strictly for movies. We don’t even have rabbit ears! And actually, while we’re at it…the t.v. was broken for months. We watched our movies on the laptop.)

The closest I’ve come is A) the day of t.v. we had in the hospital when I had Justice and B) getting hooked on The Big Bang Theory thanks to Nick’s DVD’s from the past seasons. That about covers it. And of course….the same goes for my family.

And back when I did watch t.v., it was just the basic stations. I haven’t had cable since I lived in my parents house. And you know what???

I survived! (Insert Gloria Gaynor’s voice here)

As a matter of fact, I happen to think that I am much better for it. Instead, I use my time creatively. Writing, reading, getting outside, spending quality family time, making barrettes, blogging….

I think that today’s society feels such a need for escape through fantasy, despite some of it being deceptively and blatantly referred to as “reality”, that people, as a whole (I’m being very general here), have forgotten that they have the capacity within themselves to entertain, distract, and provide relief from the stresses and pressures of daily life. People did it for centuries and centuries before television, cable, movies, video games, and the like; but I fear that people are losing that and that it’s not being passed on to younger generations. I think that in the not-too-distant-future people will no longer have the knowledge base, or rather creative base, to do these things anymore. People are becoming so dependent on technology to satisfy or enrich every aspect of their lives that they’re losing some of the qualities that set us apart from animals, specifically our creativity.

Now don’t get me wrong. I’m not, by any means, anti-tech. I’m not even really anti-t.v. I just subscribe to the belief that it’s depended upon entirely too much. Watching some show or movie every now and again, even following a show every week. Not a big deal. But I think that when it gets to be more than one or two, when you’re buying increasingly expensive tech to “record” these shows when you’re otherwise engaged so that you can keep up, and most especially when you schedule your life ‘around’ t.v. shows, it shows a distinct lack in someone’s life. Same goes for staying up until all hours of the night playing video games. Waiting in line for hours to get the next hot video game when it comes out. I see a problem there.

I come from a family whose daily activities (home-based) were centered around the t.v. That’s how I grew up. The t.v. was ALWAYS on. You folded your laundry in the living room while you watched, you ate all your meals in front of the t.v., you cleaned the house at _______ o’clock because there wasn’t “anything good” on at that time. You bitched and moaned and whined about the ridiculous cable bill you couldn’t possibly part with even though there was “never anything decent” on the myriad of stations you subscribed to.

I know that this isn’t a unique occurrence either. This goes on in millions of homes around the nation and the world. For example; one of the most common “money-saving tips” is to reduce your cable/satellite package. That certainly speaks to the importance placed on t.v. that one of the most common “tips” that financial advisers can give to help cut excessive spending is to reduce the amount you pay just to watch t.v. Yikes!

Now I understand that every now and again you need something mindless to just get lost in and take a true break. I admit that I’ve fallen victim to one or two of the most popular phone/tablet/internet games out there. Granted, it was over a year after they first hit the world… But I do not work them into every day. I actually went an entire month without them, and again, I survived. As a matter of fact, I think that I’ve probably frustrated the few people that I play these couple of games with with my lack of presence and significant delay in taking my turn.

I have a problem with the fact that fewer and fewer children are likely to reach for a book because they have a tablet or phone within reach. I am overwhelmingly proud that my 9 year old avid reader of a son has close to, if not over, 200 books. All of which he loves! My little reading machine (who is so desperately trying to read) has over 100 books. She’s 2! And those numbers increase frequently. If it were up to me, we’d have a library the size of a garage (pick your size). And we’re working on it constantly.

My kids are pretty computer competent. Justice knows how to work an iPad with remarkable skill (the iPad and iPhone that Nick got for work) and while there are some pretty cool learning games available, which are helping her learn to write, she gets iPad time maybe once or twice a week. Nothing beats good old paper, crayons, and paint. She knew her alphabet, colors, numbers, and shapes well before she even saw an iPad, much less laid hands on one.

And as if not watching t.v. weren’t enough…we don’t have any video game consoles in our house either! Unless of course you count my almost 20 year old (Ouch!) Nintendo 64 that’s been sitting in a bag for over a year and has only seen the light of day maybe 6-7 times in as many years.

So that’s us. Our incredibly happy, non-t.v. watching, non-video game playing creative household. And that’s me…one seriously happy mama for it! And that’s my rant for the week. ;)

Household Hints Numero Uno

Good afternoon fab friends and followers. I hope that this week has been great for you, or in the very least, not torturous…

Here it is folks; the long anticipated 1st Kues & Hints post. :)

Today’s offering brings to you the wonder that is vinegar. This one has it all! Remarkable cleaning capacity, deodorizing dexterity, and a complete curtailment of unsafe chemicals. Wooo!

I switched to vinegar a couple of years ago for almost all of my cleaning tasks. I love it!! A cleaning “tool” that is safe around my kids?? That doesn’t pollute our water or air?? Sign me up!

Most everyone knows (if you didn’t before, you do now), that vinegar is great for glass; from windows to water glasses and everything in between. I remember hearing years ago that vinegar was terrific at removing hard water etching from coffee decanters and the like, but I never was able to put that to the test myself since I’ve never owned a coffee pot (no, I’m not making the Starbucks shareholders rich, I’m just not a big fan of coffee). I did however, try it on a beautiful clear and cobalt glass tabletop fountain that I’ve had for years. It was amazing! I hadn’t been proudly displaying this particular fountain for a few years because the etching was so bad. Yeah, finally, I remembered the vinegar trick and put it to the test. Holy cow! There’s so very little residue or etching left. And all I did was wipe the surface areas that weren’t submersible with a vinegar soaked paper towel. The bowl (with the hole in the bottom for the spout) got a couple of good swishes while I plugged the bottom with my finger. No extensive cleaning, no soaking, just a relatively quick wipe and rinse. I am so happy that I can now have the fountain back out for folks to enjoy. Unfortunately, I didn’t think to take pictures until I was done rinsing and reassembling it. (Insert very homer-like smack to the head here please)

I’ve been using vinegar to clean the kitchen and bathrooms for a couple of years now. Everything from the tub/shower walls, the counters, the faucets and fixtures, the drains, the stove surfaces, to toilets. And pretty much everywhere in between. I love it. Vinegar deodorizes like a champ! (fabulous for freshening drains!)
Here’s a couple of sites with plenty of cleaning tips and tricks with vinegar: Vinegartips.com and The Vinegar Institute. Definitely check them out for tips on using it for darn near everything!!

It was about a year ago that a friend told me about using a vinegar rinse on her hair to really remove any styling product or conditioner build up. I thought…”Really? Putting vinegar in your hair? Really?” Once she saw the look of hesitation and doubt on my face she was very quick to point out that the vinegar smell completely disappears once your hair is dry. I looked up a couple of articles/blog posts about vinegar rinses and sure enough; there were multiple recipes for darn near every hair type and affliction. Some of them take some brewing and time, others are quick to mix up and ready to use. Now, I’ve never been one for styling products. My hair is so ridiculously fine that any product just weighs it down. Product will pull a curl out of my hair faster than it takes to put the curl in in the first place, not that my hair can hold a curl on its own anyway but given my need to wash and condition my hair on a daily basis, I thought it was certainly worth a shot to make sure that there wasn’t any build up of oil or conditioner. Wouldn’t ya know it? My hair felt a bit softer and cleaner when I was done. Now, to get the most effectiveness out of your rinse is not for the faint of heart. The best way to do it is to rinse with Cold water. Or you can opt to leave it on without rinsing for better results.
Here is the recipe site that I like: Apple Cider Vinegar Benefits
They also have a great wealth of information to be found on their Left Sidebar, with cleaning tips, vinegar info, etc…

And on those notes…I will depart for now. If you’ve found one of these tips particularly fabulous or you have one of your own to add, please, grace us with your wisdom and insight by leaving a comment below or emailing it to me.

Hoping you find a new world of clean,

Kitchen Kues & Household Hints

Hey there fab fans & followers!
Since I’m making my big comeback, I decided that a great way to do it was with a new feature; Kitchen Kues & Household Hints.
My goal is to start a fabulous spot to share all those little tips and tricks that we’ve discovered or invented to help us get through life. They certainly do not need to be limited to the kitchen! They can be cleaning cues, personal care suggestions, design ideas, organizing opinions, cooking concepts, teaching tips, play plans, whatever ya got!

I will be bringing you my first post on this very soon.
I can’t wait to hear what you’ve got to share with everyone either!

Workin up to it

Just thought that I’d drop you a quick note on Weekly Meal Plans.
I’m getting back into the swing and am working on bringing you some new things. I don’t think I’ll be restarting the Weekly Meal Plans for at least another week though. I need to do some work on finding new recipes as well as getting things back to organized here at the house.
Don’t forget; Share your favorite recipes with us. I’d love to see what ya got and give ‘em a whirl.
Hit up the contact page for the mode of communication you prefer.

Can’t wait to hear from you and start sharing new stuff.

Berries and Carrots and Tomatoes, Oh my!

Somewhere around the end of last month I made a decision.
We need alot more fruits and veggies in our diets. No more of this crackers for most snacks business (really bad, I know).
Well, when I decide to do something, especially for our health, I stick to it! So, now I (Justice doesn’t always participate and the hubby doesn’t always have room to store fruits and veggies at work but they’re both working on it) have at least one serving of fruits and/or veggies with each meal as well as having them for snacks. Justice knows that if she wants a snack she’s getting fruits or veggies except for a rare treat of (lower sugar) animal crackers or goldfish or something.
And let me tell you, I love it!!
My typical choices are things that are easy to chop and store.
Watermelon, strawberries, raspberries, black berries, pears, apples, grapes, kiwi, and clementine oranges.
For veggies I tend to stick to grape or cherry tomatoes, cauliflower, baby carrots, orange and yellow peppers, celery, and cucumbers.
One tip I have found that helps immensely is cutting everything up as soon as we get home from grocery shopping. I was doing it at each meal time but by the time I was done, the meal was almost over. So, yesterday after I got everything put away, I proceeded to wash and chop about 5 lbs. of fruit. The veggies get pieced today. Talk about easier and more efficient. Wooo!

So I just thought that I’d share this morning’s addition to breakfast.

Yummm!!!
(and Justice discovered she loved the rasp/black berries. :)

(sorry for the blur, it was a quick phone pic)

I hope that you all rethink your fruit and vegetable consumption (if it’s not already sufficient) and use this as inspiration on how you can better your diet. You’ll still get plenty of sweetness but packed with vitamins and antioxidants and fiber! Wooo!
I’m so loving it. And so is my body. :)
